Engineer Your Talks: Writing Talk Proposals Workshop

You've got an idea for a talk.

But you're unsure how to write a compelling proposal.

You don't know how to craft a title that grabs attention or a description that makes people want to hear more.

That's what the Engineer Your Talks: Writing Talk Proposals Workshop is for!

In this interactive 2-hour workshop, you'll learn how to approach writing talk proposals by applying an engineering mindset. You'll explore models and frameworks to develop compelling titles and descriptions in a structured way, which you can replicate for any future proposals. You'll understand how to refine your ideas and submission process to increase your chances of getting accepted at your favourite conferences.

When: November 29th (Friday) 16:00-18:00 BST (15:00-17:00 UTC)

Where: Online using Butter

Given the interactive element, this workshop is limited to only 20 attendees.

What you’ll learn:

In this 2-hour workshop, I'll take you through the process of creating a talk proposal. You'll learn how to:

  • Define your key takeaways: You'll highlight the key takeaways and refine your talk ideas so they resonate with your audience and align with conference themes.
  • Write standout talk descriptions: You'll practice writing clear, concise, and engaging talk descriptions highlighting your session's value and key takeaways. You'll learn how to structure your descriptions to captivate both reviewers and potential attendees.
  • Experiment with talk titles: You'll explore how to create compelling titles that not only grab attention but also clearly convey the essence of your talk.
  • Navigate the CFP submission process: You'll gain insider knowledge on what conference organisers look for in proposals and how to tailor your submission to meet those expectations.

This is an interactive workshop with self-reflection exercises, breakout room discussions and a Q&A. You'll get practical exercises to put techniques immediately into practice and have the opportunity to discuss your ideas with fellow workshop attendees.

Why work with me?

I specialise in 1:1 speaker training and coaching tailored specifically for engineers and engineering leaders. I have over a decade of experience as both an international conference speaker and engineering leader, and over those years, I have helped many others improve their talks. I understand tech audiences and can help you create talks that will have a lasting impact on them.

I've previously worked at companies such as the Wikimedia Foundation and FutureLearn, where I focused on improving engineering management skills and practices and creating an internal engineering culture of learning. I’ve led on building outreach and evangelism initiatives, to get teams teaching each other and sharing what they know within the company as well as the wider tech community.

What does it cost?

Normally my 1:1 coaching programs begin at £1500.

This workshop is only £199 £149.
